LIV Golf’s Sergio Garcia is preparing to make his return to the DP World Tour in 2025

It could pave the way for him to equal the record for most Ryder Cup appearances.

The 44-year-old, who claimed the 2017 Masters title, resigned his membership from the DP World Tour in 2023 after facing sanctions for joining the breakaway LIV Golf league the previous year.

However, a spokesperson for the DP World Tour confirmed to CNN Sport that Garcia had applied to rejoin the tour and had settled his fines following his defection.

“Sergio Garcia has applied to return to the DP World Tour for the 2025 season, ahead of the November 17 deadline,” the spokesperson said. “He has paid his fines and will need to serve his suspensions before being allowed to compete.”

While reports suggest Garcia’s fines exceeded $1.06 million, the DP World Tour did not disclose further details.

Garcia has long been a key figure in the Ryder Cup, holding the record for the most points ever scored at the event. With 10 appearances and six victories since his first in 1999, Garcia could match Nick Faldo and Lee Westwood for the most European appearances (11) if he plays in next year’s competition.

Phil Mickelson, the American golfer, holds the overall record with 12 Ryder Cup appearances.

Garcia’s decision to join LIV Golf in 2022 made him ineligible for last year’s Ryder Cup, which was won by Europe. The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage in New York in September.
