Guardians–White Sox Washed Out: Rainout Forces Friday Doubleheader in Chicago

Thursday night’s game between the Cleveland Guardians and the Chicago White Sox was postponed due to persistent rain, setting the stage for a split-ticket doubleheader on Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The first game of the twin bill will start at 2:10 p.m. CT (3:10 p.m. ET), with the originally scheduled night game following at 7:10 p.m. CT (8:10 p.m. ET). Despite dry conditions at the scheduled first pitch time of 6:40 p.m. CT on Thursday, heavy rain soon rolled in and lingered throughout the evening, forcing the delay and eventual postponement.

Pitching Matchups Set for Friday

Cleveland will hand the ball to Logan Allen in Game 1. The lefty was originally slated to start Thursday and now shifts to the early slot on Friday. Right-hander Gavin Williams, who had been Friday’s probable starter, will take the mound in the nightcap.

Allen brings a 3.74 ERA into the outing and will be looking to help Cleveland improve its 2–2 record in doubleheaders this season. The Guardians have already played in three twin bills, splitting with the Red Sox in April and the Nationals in early May, while also handling a suspended game against the Twins in late May.

The White Sox will counter with All-Star right-hander Shane Smith in the opener and Jonathan Cannon in the second game. Cannon was Thursday’s scheduled starter and will now pitch under the lights on Friday.

“He’s a professional,” said White Sox manager Will Venable about Cannon. “He knows how to manage traffic and find ways to get outs. When runners are on, he stays calm and executes. That’s what makes him so reliable.”

Fan Info, Promotions, and Special Events

Fans holding tickets for Thursday’s game can use them for entry to the 2:10 p.m. CT makeup game on Friday. No exchanges are required. This also applies to parking and Stadium Club passes.

The White Sox will still proceed with Friday evening’s planned festivities as part of the team’s 2005 World Series 20-year reunion weekend. The Mark Buehrle statue unveiling remains on schedule for 6:45 p.m. CT between games.

As for giveaways, the White Sox’s Yacht Rock Hat promo was distributed to fans who entered the park Thursday prior to the postponement. Friday night’s 2005 Champions Hawaiian Shirt giveaway will be available to the first 15,000 fans attending the 7:10 p.m. game.

Ballpark logistics are as follows:

  • Parking lots open at 12:10 p.m. CT

  • Gates for Game 1 open at 1:10 p.m.

  • Gates for Game 2 open at 5:40 p.m.

Fans are advised to plan accordingly if attending both games of the doubleheader.
