Naomi Osaka Advances to Face Raducanu in DC Open Second Round
Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka continued her return to form at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, securing a straight-sets victory over Yulia Putintseva, 6-2, 7-5, on Tuesday. With this win, Osaka advances to the second round where she will meet Emma Raducanu, who defeated No. 7 seed Marta Kostyuk 7-6(4), 6-4 in her opening match.
Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, displayed a solid performance against Putintseva, delivering eight aces, winning 89% of her first serves, and securing four service breaks. Since her return to the tour following maternity leave in 2023, Osaka has compiled a 21-10 record this year, though she has voiced frustration with her results, particularly after early exits at the French Open and Wimbledon.
“I feel like I should be doing better,” Osaka said after her match in Paris, acknowledging the high expectations that come with her past success. Nevertheless, she expressed comfort returning to hard courts, the surface on which she won all her Grand Slam titles.
The upcoming match against Raducanu marks their first career meeting. Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, is making a strong comeback following an injury-plagued 2023 season that included three surgeries and an eight-month layoff. Her win over Kostyuk was her best by ranking since May, and showcased her resilience in hot conditions, particularly in a tight 70-minute first set.
Osaka and Raducanu are both former US Open champions, making their DC Open clash highly anticipated. Both athletes have experienced the pinnacle of the sport and are now working to recapture their championship form. Osaka, 27, aims to build momentum on hard courts, while Raducanu, 22, looks to test herself against top-tier competition as she returns to full fitness.
Fans can expect a competitive matchup between two players with Grand Slam pedigree, each seeking to take the next step in their respective comebacks.
