Zach Wilson – NFL News, Rumors, & Updates

Zach Wilson Signs with Miami Dolphins After Stint with Broncos

Zach Wilson, the former No. 2 overall NFL draft pick, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. This move comes after Wilson spent a brief period with the Denver Broncos, where he primarily served as an emergency third-string quarterback and saw limited action during the preseason.

Wilson’s time in Denver was notable for its uncertainty. Despite being acquired by the Broncos in April 2024—along with a seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick—the quarterback faced stiff competition. Rookie Bo Nix was quickly named the Broncos’ Week 1 starter, and Jarrett Stidham was established as the likely backup after preseason evaluations. Head coach Sean Payton gave Wilson extended playing time in the preseason finale, hoping to assess his fit within the team’s plans.

Financially, the Broncos and the New York Jets, Wilson’s former team, agreed to split his $5.5 million guaranteed salary for the 2024 season. Wilson’s career statistics in New York included a 12-21 starting record, 23 touchdown passes, and 25 interceptions over three seasons—numbers that led to his label as a draft disappointment.

Payton was publicly supportive of Wilson’s improvements in training camp, stating, “I just want you to focus on having fun and playing. My job is to make you millions, either with us or for another team.” Despite these remarks, it became evident that Wilson’s long-term role in Denver was uncertain, especially after offseason rule changes allowed teams more flexibility with third-string quarterbacks.

With the move to Miami, Wilson will have another opportunity to revive his career. The Dolphins, who have been actively seeking depth at quarterback, provide a new environment for Wilson to prove himself. Given his age and pedigree, many analysts are curious whether a change of scenery can help him reach his potential. For the Dolphins, signing Wilson is a low-risk move that could pay dividends if he can capitalize on this fresh start.
