Trey Lance Set to Start for Los Angeles Chargers in Hall of Fame Game
Trey Lance will start at quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers in the 2025 Hall of Fame Game against the Detroit Lions, as announced by head coach Jim Harbaugh. The Chargers have decided to rest their veteran starters, including Justin Herbert, Rashawn Slater, Khalil Mack, and Derwin James Jr., giving Lance the opportunity to lead the offense for at least the first half of play.Lance, who signed a one-year, $6 million contract with Los Angeles this offseason after stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys, is seeking to revive his career. The former No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has made 12 career appearances, including five starts, accumulating 1,063 passing yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions. Last season with the Cowboys, Lance played in four games, starting once and recording 266 passing yards with one interception.

Coach Harbaugh highlighted Lance’s strong training camp and emphasized the importance of gaining in-game experience for the 25-year-old quarterback. DJ Uiagalelei is scheduled to play in the second half, while Taylor Heinicke will serve as the emergency third quarterback.

The preseason opener will also feature several Chargers rookies making their NFL debuts, including Omarion Hampton, Tre’ Harris, and KeAndre Lambert-Smith. Offensive lineman Zion Johnson, who has practiced at both center and left guard, is expected to start at center and play a couple of drives.
