Aryna Sabalenka Defeats Emma Raducanu in Thrilling Cincinnati Open Showdown
Aryna Sabalenka’s relentless title defense at the Cincinnati Open continued with a dramatic victory over Emma Raducanu in a third-round match that stretched the limits of endurance and nerve. The world No. 1 survived a tense three-hour, nine-minute battle, ultimately edging Raducanu 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(5), and reinforcing her reputation as one of the game’s best under pressure.

In a contest marked by extraordinary resilience and momentum swings, Sabalenka and Raducanu delivered a spectacle for the Cincinnati crowd. Raducanu, the British No. 1 and 2021 US Open champion, started strongly, winning the first eight points of the match. However, Sabalenka, a three-time Grand Slam winner, quickly recovered, showcasing her trademark power and mental toughness. Their opening set was decided by a tiebreaker, where Sabalenka’s aggressive serving—highlighted by back-to-back aces—pushed her to an 11-0 record in first-set tiebreaks for the year.

Raducanu responded in the second set, producing a clinical serving display—missing only five of her 28 first serves—and breaking Sabalenka in the seventh game before sealing the set with an ace. It marked the first set Raducanu had ever taken from the Belarusian star in their three career meetings, each of which has occurred in the past 18 months.

The deciding set became an instant classic, featuring a 23-minute, 13-deuce eighth game in which Raducanu fended off four break points before holding serve. Despite her valiant effort, Sabalenka’s composure in tiebreaks again proved decisive. She clinched the final set tiebreak 7-5 on her second match point, extending her remarkable streak to 18 tiebreak wins in 2025—a record for a single calendar year in the Open Era, according to ESPN’s Aryna Sabalenka player page.

Sabalenka finished with 46 winners but also 72 unforced errors, reflecting the high-risk, high-reward nature of her game. She has now won all three encounters against Raducanu, and with 49 match wins and nearly 100 hours spent on court this season, she remains the most durable player on the Hologic WTA Tour.

For Raducanu, the loss was another near-miss against the sport’s elite; she has now lost 11 of 12 matches against current WTA Top 5 players. Still, her performance, especially under the guidance of new coach Francisco Roig (longtime mentor to Rafael Nadal), was encouraging ahead of the upcoming US Open.

Sabalenka advances to face Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the Round of 16, while Raducanu looks to regroup for the last Grand Slam of the year. The Cincinnati Open continues to provide compelling narratives as top seeds are tested and new records are set.
