San Francisco, coming off a heavy loss to Denver in their preseason opener, started the game with several key starters including quarterback Brock Purdy, who led the opening drive resulting in a field goal. Purdy was followed by Mac Jones and later Carter Bradley, as the 49ers rotated quarterbacks throughout the game. Rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall made an early impact, catching three passes for 42 yards on the opening drive.
The Raiders, led by quarterback Aidan O’Connell, responded with a mix of field goals and a short rushing touchdown from rookie Ashton Jeanty, who finished as their leading rusher. Kicker Daniel Carlson was effective, converting all four of his field goal attempts, including a 54-yarder.
Injuries played a significant role for the 49ers. Running backs Corey Kiner and Patrick Taylor both exited the game in the first half, leaving Jeff Wilson and Ke’Shawn Vaughn as the only healthy options in the backfield. On the offensive line, right guard Dominick Puni was also ruled out early due to injury.
San Francisco’s defense stepped up in critical moments. Rookie linebacker Nick Martin recorded his first NFL sack, while defensive back Jaylen Mahoney and cornerback Chase Lucas each made key interceptions. The defensive pressure resulted in several sacks and forced turnovers, stalling multiple Raiders drives.
The game remained close in the fourth quarter. With the score tied 19-19 and time winding down, 49ers kicker Jake Moody, who had missed a field goal earlier, converted a career-long 59-yard attempt to give San Francisco the lead. Moody finished the game 4-for-5, including a 50-yard field goal to tie the game late in the fourth.
Wide receiver Robbie Chosen delivered a crucial 30-yard reception in the final minutes, setting up Moody’s game-winning kick. Tight end Jake Tonges also made an important fourth-down conversion to extend a late drive.
Despite missing key starters such as Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, and Nick Bosa, the 49ers’ depth was tested but ultimately delivered. The victory was a much-needed confidence boost after their preseason opening defeat. Head coach Kyle Shanahan had indicated prior to the game that some starters would see limited action as the team managed injuries and evaluated younger talent.
The 49ers will conclude their preseason schedule against the Chargers on August 23. For more real-time updates, game analysis, and highlights, visit the CBS Sports GameTracker or follow the official 49ers Twitter account.
