Mitchell Tinsley Shines in Preseason to Secure Bengals Roster Spot
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley has been making headlines with his standout performances during the 2025 NFL preseason, particularly in the team’s matchup against the Washington Commanders. On Monday night, Tinsley returned to Washington, where he first entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Commanders in 2023. This preseason game was a pivotal moment in his pursuit of a spot on the Bengals’ 53-man roster, and he delivered with two touchdown catches from quarterback Jake Browning, as reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Tinsley’s journey to this point is a testament to his resilience and adaptability. Born on September 15, 1999, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Tinsley played college football at Hutchinson Community College, Western Kentucky, and Penn State. At Western Kentucky, he was a force in 2021, finishing second in Conference USA in receiving yards (1,402), receptions (87), and touchdown catches (14), achievements that placed him in the top 20 nationally in all three categories. His final college year at Penn State saw him catch 51 passes for 577 yards and five touchdowns, extending his streak to 39 consecutive games with a reception (Penn State Athletics).

Now in his third NFL season, Tinsley faces fierce competition for a roster spot behind established Bengals receivers like Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Despite only appearing in two NFL games so far, Tinsley’s acrobatic catches and mental preparation have set him apart in training camp. His mother, Veronica Bruce, credits his success to a lifelong passion for the game, which began with a fascination for NFL legends like Reggie Bush and Jerry Rice. She notes his remarkable ability to adapt to new offenses—this preseason marks his eighth new system since his days at Hutchinson.

Tinsley attributes his recent progress to a focus on sports psychology and a “workaholic” approach to training. Drawing inspiration from trainers who worked with Michael Jordan, he emphasizes the importance of staying mentally sharp, not overthinking, and controlling what he can control. “I always knew I could play. What I’m doing here is no surprise to me. It was more mental. Not letting outside factors affect my mindset,” Tinsley told Bengals.com.

His time in Washington also allowed him to learn from Pro Bowl receiver Terry McLaurin and to witness the rookie season of Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. Tinsley is now one of the few receivers to have played alongside both Daniels and Bengals star Joe Burrow, an experience he calls “exciting.” Burrow even praised Tinsley’s early camp performances during a news conference, something his mother made sure to share with him as he keeps his focus away from social media.

With his combination of physical talent and mental fortitude, Tinsley is making a strong case to secure a roster spot on a Bengals team loaded with talent at wide receiver. His efforts this preseason, especially the pair of touchdowns against his former team, have not gone unnoticed and could be the catalyst for a breakout season.
