Born in December 2005 to Vietnamese immigrant parents, Khuong Dan Tien and Huyen Tien, Tien’s upbringing was grounded and supportive. His father, a real estate attorney, and mother, a teacher, chose his unique first name as a reflection of their professions—a fact that Tien now embraces. He told ATPTour.com that he enjoys the distinctiveness of his name and the values it represents.
In January, Tien made headlines at the Australian Open by becoming the youngest man since Rafael Nadal in 2005 to reach the fourth round. Along the way, he achieved his first Top 10 victory by defeating Daniil Medvedev, further cementing his status as a rising star. “It’s a lot to take in, playing all these new events,” Tien said. “I’m just excited to play these events and enjoy every moment.”
As Tien adapts to the challenges of life on tour—playing in unfamiliar venues and experiencing new cultures—he remains focused on his development and the opportunity to compete against the world’s best. With his breakthrough performances and strong mentality, Learner Tien is poised to be a key figure in the future of American tennis.
