Castellanos was instrumental in keeping the chains moving, using his dual-threat capabilities to convert critical downs and limit Alabama’s opportunities. In total, Florida State ran the ball 49 times out of 63 plays, and Castellanos’ 16 carries contributed to several first downs and a touchdown. His ability to execute a variety of running schemes behind a revitalized offensive line proved too much for Alabama’s defense to handle.
The partnership between Castellanos and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has quickly paid dividends. Malzahn, known for his creative run schemes, tailored the offense to Castellanos’ strengths, allowing the Seminoles to dominate possession and keep Alabama’s high-powered attack off the field. When Castellanos did throw, he made the most of his opportunities, connecting on long passes of 64 and 40 yards.
This victory is a dramatic shift for Florida State, which endured a disappointing 2-10 season the previous year. Head coach Mike Norvell was under pressure entering 2025, but the gamble to bring in Castellanos and Malzahn appears to be paying off. With only three more ranked opponents left on the schedule—No. 10 Miami, No. 4 Clemson, and No. 15 Florida—the Seminoles’ path to the ACC Championship Game is suddenly much clearer.
Castellanos’ journey has been eventful. After a productive stint at Boston College, where he tallied over 3,600 passing yards and 1,300 rushing yards, he entered the transfer portal following a coaching change. Now, as the focal point of the Seminoles’ offense, his dynamic playmaking has given Florida State new hope and energy for the season ahead.
