During his final season at American Heritage, Toney led the Patriots to a 12-2 record and a Class 4A state championship, recording 58 receptions for 1,008 yards and 12 touchdowns. Over his high school career, he totaled 28 touchdowns. His 2023 campaign saw him post 49 catches for 773 yards and eight scores, helping his team to the Class 2M state semifinals. Toney’s performance earned him the 2024 Nat Moore Award as South Florida’s top football player and recognition as Florida High School Player of the Year by MaxPreps.
Known for his agility and reliable hands, Toney operates efficiently from the slot, using quick acceleration to create separation on short routes. At 5’11” and approximately 180 pounds, he compensates for average size with advanced route-running and the ability to elude defenders after the catch. Though one of the youngest players on the Miami roster, Toney is expected to develop into a key playmaker as he adapts to the college level.
Toney chose Miami over offers from programs including Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, and Texas A&M. Off the field, Toney has drawn attention for his family background. While some have speculated about a connection to NFL receiver Kadarius Toney, there is no known relation. According to Saturday Down South, Malachi is the son of former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown, who played for the Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins.
After the Notre Dame game, Toney spoke about the support from his family, especially his mother and late aunt Reba, crediting them for his drive and determination. As he begins his college career, expectations are high for Toney to become a standout contributor for the Hurricanes in the coming seasons.
