Quarterback Baker Mayfield led Tampa Bay with three touchdown passes, including a decisive 25-yard strike to rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka with just under a minute remaining. Mayfield finished with a poised performance, finding Egbuka twice in the end zone and connecting with running back Bucky Irving for another score. Egbuka also recorded his first NFL catch and made a clear impact in his debut.
The Falcons, under new defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, showed significant improvement on defense, forcing consecutive three-and-outs to open the game. Offensively, rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. flashed potential, orchestrating a gritty 18-play, 91-yard fourth-quarter drive capped by his own 4-yard touchdown run to give Atlanta a brief 20-17 lead. Running back Bijan Robinson opened Atlanta’s scoring with a 50-yard touchdown reception, the longest completion of Penix’s career to date.
Tampa Bay answered Atlanta’s late touchdown with a rapid five-play, 63-yard scoring drive, highlighted by Mayfield’s connection with Egbuka. The Buccaneers’ defense, anchored by Calijah Kancey and Yaya Diaby, held strong on critical downs, including a fourth-down stop in the red zone. Special teams also contributed, with Kameron Johnson breaking off a 54-yard punt return.
For Atlanta, linebacker Divine Deablo impressed in his Falcons debut, tallying six tackles, a half-sack, and a pass breakup. The Falcons’ rookie class contributed immediately, with safety Xavier Watts and cornerback Billy Bowman Jr. both starting and making key plays in the secondary.
The loss drops Atlanta to 0-1 and puts them behind early in the NFC South race. Head coach Raheem Morris’ team will look to regroup as they prepare to visit the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers leave Atlanta with momentum, showing promise on both sides of the ball as they begin their 2025 campaign.
