Mammoth And Flyers Interested in Sabres Prospect Devon Levi

While second-line centers remain the soup du jour on the NHL trade market, chatter around Buffalo Sabres goalie prospect Devon Levi is starting to gain steam.

This past Wednesday, the ‘After The Whistle’ podcast, hosted by former Sabres defenseman Craig Rivet and Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters, cited a rumor that Levi requested a trade from the Sabres after failing to make their NHL roster out of training camp.

Note: Email requests to a Sabres team source and Levi’s agent Ian Pulver to confirm the report on Thursday were not returned.

Ironically, R.org had been tracking some recent NHL trade chatter on Levi and reached out to a trusted NHL source upon learning of the above report.

“I haven’t confirmed that, but like I already told you, his name has been out there since he didn’t make the team out of camp,” the source told R.org on Thursday. “It got weird when they signed Alexandar Georgiev when UPL [Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen] was hurt in camp, and then they went with him and Lyon, and then added Colton Ellis instead of giving Levi a chance.

A lot of teams have been watching this, and I can tell you that the Mammoth and the Flyers would love to know what it takes to get this kid in a trade. I don’t think talks with them or other teams have gotten too far yet, but there will be more if the kid wants out.”

Ever since Devon Levi, along with a 2022 first-round pick (Jiri Kulich), was acquired by the Buffalo Sabres on July 24, 2021, Levi has been viewed by many around the team and the NHL as potentially becoming the franchise goalie that the Sabres have been missing since legend Ryan Miller was traded away back in 2014. However, Levi has only appeared in 39 NHL games since then, going 17-17-2 with a 3.29 GAA and a .894 save percentage.

After going 25-13-4 with a 2.20 GAA and a .919 save percentage for Rochester in the AHL last season, the belief was he’d at least be given a chance to at least be called up if Pekka Luukkonen got hurt.

“I know the kid didn’t have the best camp, but man, I just think he’s worth a shot instead of bringing in stop gaps like Lyon and Ellis,” another NHL source said on Thursday night. “You look at this Sabres roster right now and clearly, goaltending – and yes, Lyon hasn’t been horrible and Ellis looked OK – is the missing link. So here’s the question then, does giving up on Levi make sense? Who are you getting right now for him that’s better than any of the guys they have?”

“I get Utah could use more help now, but they need proven help in my opinion, and on top of that, they have [Michael] Hrabel coming. I think you still need to look at Edmonton and Carolina, too.”

Michael Hrabel was drafted in the second round, 38th overall, by the then-Arizona Coyotes in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently the No. 1 goalie for the UMass-Amherst Minutemen.
