Patriots Escape with Narrow Victory over Falcons in Thrilling Game
The New England Patriots secured a narrow 24-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Foxborough during NFL Week 9, marking their sixth straight win and improving their record to 7-2. Atlanta, meanwhile, dropped its third consecutive game, falling to 3-5 on the season after a missed extra point in the final minutes sealed their fate. The Patriots built an early lead, with rookie quarterback Drake Maye throwing for 259 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Maye’s first-half connection with DeMario Douglas and Stefon Diggs put New England up 21-7, while Terrell Jennings added his first career rushing touchdown. Despite being sacked six times and committing two turnovers, Maye made a crucial 17-yard completion to Hunter Henry in the closing minutes to run out the clock and secure the win. The Falcons kept the game close, thanks to a strong defensive performance that included six sacks—their highest single-game total since 2004—and a key strip-sack by Jalon Walker, recovered by rookie James Pearce Jr. Wide receiver Drake London delivered a career performance with nine catches for 119 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the first Atlanta player with three receiving TDs in a game since 1991. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. finished 22 of 37 for 222 yards and three touchdowns, all to London, with no turnovers. Atlanta trailed 24-17 late in the fourth quarter but mounted a late rally. Penix connected with London on a 40-yard gain, then hit him again for a fourth-down, toe-tap touchdown to bring the Falcons within one point. However, kicker Parker Romo missed the ensuing extra point, leaving Atlanta behind 24-23 with just over four minutes remaining. The Patriots were forced to punt, giving the Falcons another chance, but a costly intentional grounding penalty on Penix pushed Atlanta out of field goal range, and New England’s defense held firm. The result extended the Falcons’ losing streak against the Patriots to eight games; Atlanta has not won in Foxborough since 1998. The Patriots remain atop the AFC East, while Atlanta sits third in the NFC South and faces a critical matchup next week against the Indianapolis Colts in Berlin. New England travels to Tampa Bay for Week 10. For more details, see the ESPN game recap and the Patriots.com Rapid Recap.
