Freshman quarterback Scotty Fox Jr. led the West Virginia Mountaineers with 202 passing yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Converted running back Curtis Jones Jr. contributed two short rushing touchdowns, including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter.
West Virginia’s defense dominated the line of scrimmage, amassing seven sacks and 15 tackles for loss. The Mountaineers forced three turnovers but allowed Colorado to stay within reach thanks to their own miscues. However, the Buffaloes, missing both starting offensive tackles and key defensive backs, struggled to capitalize on West Virginia’s mistakes.
The first quarter set the tone, with West Virginia blocking a Colorado punt for a safety and following up with a 2-yard touchdown run by Curtis Jones Jr. to take a 9-0 lead. Colorado answered with a field goal and a touchdown in the second quarter, but West Virginia maintained the advantage with a 41-yard field goal just before halftime, making it 19-9.
Colorado fought back in the third, with Lewis connecting with Miller for a 23-yard score. Yet, West Virginia responded with a field goal and a decisive 10-play, 57-yard drive in the fourth quarter, capped by Jones Jr.’s second touchdown. Colorado managed a late field goal but failed to recover the onside kick, sealing the Mountaineers’ win.
With the loss, Colorado drops to 3-7 overall (1-6 Big 12), while West Virginia improves to 4-6 (2-5 Big 12). The Buffaloes, led by head coach Deion Sanders, now focus on developing young talent for the remainder of the season. Despite the defeat, Lewis’s strong debut offers hope for Colorado’s future at quarterback.
