Steelers and Chargers Battle in Low-Scoring Clash
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Chargers met at SoFi Stadium on November 9, 2025, in a low-scoring, defense-heavy contest on Sunday Night Football. By the second quarter, the Steelers held a slim 3-2 lead, with both teams struggling to generate offensive momentum.

After both teams went three-and-out to start the game, Pittsburgh struck first with a 59-yard field goal by Chris Boswell. The Chargers responded with a key defensive play: Khalil Mack sacked Aaron Rodgers in his own end zone, forcing a safety and putting Los Angeles on the board. Neither offense found much rhythm, with the teams combining for just 85 total yards and going a combined 0-for-7 on third down in the first quarter.

Pittsburgh’s defense, which had ranked in the bottom third of the NFL in third-down stops entering Week 10, was particularly effective early, holding Justin Herbert and the Chargers to just 25 yards on 14 plays in the opening quarter. The Chargers, despite converting a fourth-and-1 with a ‘tush push,’ could not capitalize, punting four plays later.

Aaron Rodgers, who recently surpassed Ben Roethlisberger for fifth in all-time passing yards, found D.K. Metcalf and Jonnu Smith on promising gains, but Pittsburgh’s drives repeatedly stalled due to penalties and missed opportunities. Boswell, after his long-range make, later missed a 45-yard attempt. Meanwhile, the Steelers’ offensive line struggled to contain Mack and the Chargers’ pass rush.

Both teams entered the matchup with playoff droughts. Pittsburgh has not won a playoff game since 2016, while Los Angeles has not advanced past the Wild Card since 2018. The game’s key highlight so far was Mack’s safety, which kept the Chargers close despite their offensive woes.

Notable performers included Rodgers (6/9, 56 yards passing), Metcalf (1 catch, 19 yards), and for the Chargers, Herbert (7/12, 35 yards) and rookie back Kimani Vidal (4 carries, 24 yards). On defense, Mack led the Chargers with a sack and three tackles, while Patrick Queen paced the Steelers with six tackles.

The low-scoring affair reflected both teams’ recent trends: the Steelers had lost five straight primetime games, while the Chargers had won their last four in such spots. As the game progressed, both sides looked for a breakthrough, knowing the outcome could impact AFC playoff positioning.
