McCaffrey, a 2025 nominee for the NFL’s Salute to Service Award, led the offense with 22 carries and seven receptions, surpassing 125 scrimmage yards and continuing his historic pace as one of the league’s most versatile backs. According to NFL.com, McCaffrey became just the third running back in NFL history to record 50 or more games with at least 50 receiving yards, joining Larry Centers and Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk.
The 49ers’ offensive drives were deliberate, with three of their four scoring possessions lasting over ten plays and consuming more than six minutes each. Purdy, making only his second start since returning from injury, managed a 15-play touchdown drive capped by a pass to Jauan Jennings but showed rust throughout the game. All three of Purdy’s interceptions came on deep throws, a rare occurrence that last happened in 2023, as noted by Next Gen Stats.
Despite the absence of defensive leader Fred Warner and several key starters, San Francisco’s defense held Carolina to just 230 total yards and a single third-down conversion. The unit, led by coordinator Robert Saleh, repeatedly stifled Bryce Young and the Panthers, denying Carolina’s late attempts to rally. The Panthers’ offense, meanwhile, faltered, converting turnovers into only three points and failing to capitalize in the red zone. Running backs Rico Dowdle and Chuba Hubbard combined for just nine carries, as Carolina abandoned the ground game despite a close score through three quarters.
The 49ers’ resilience and depth were on display at Levi’s Stadium, with players showcasing custom cleats for the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” initiative, supporting various charitable causes. Defensive efforts and disciplined, clock-consuming offense reflected head coach Kyle Shanahan’s trademark style, keeping San Francisco firmly in the postseason race and underscoring the team’s ability to win ugly when necessary.
