Younghoe Koo Misses 47-Yard Field Goal Attempt in Giants’ Loss to Patriots
New York Giants place kicker Younghoe Koo delivered one of the most unusual moments of the NFL season during the Giants’ 33-15 loss to the New England Patriots on Monday night. In the second quarter, with the Giants trailing by 10 points, Koo lined up for a 47-yard field goal attempt—an opportunity to bring his team within one score before halftime. Instead, the attempt went viral for all the wrong reasons.

Rather than striking the ball cleanly, Koo appeared to make contact with the turf, missing the ball entirely as it shifted at the last moment. The play resulted in a scramble, with holder Jamie Gillan being tackled and the play officially recorded as a 13-yard sack by Patriots’ Jeremiah Pharms. Koo later attributed the botched attempt to the cold Foxborough weather, explaining, “I was approaching the ball and, cold weather, the ball kind of slipped out at the bottom so it was moving. I wasn’t able to kick through the ball. The ball was moving when I was driving to it, so I just pulled up on it.” (New York Post)

This was not the first time Koo has faced adversity this season. Earlier, he was released by the Atlanta Falcons following a crucial missed field goal, only to find a new opportunity with the Giants. The latest mishap, however, highlights ongoing special teams struggles for New York. In addition to Koo’s error, return specialist Gunner Olszewski fumbled a kickoff late in the first half after a heavy tackle, leading to another Patriots field goal.

The Patriots capitalized on New York’s mistakes, with wide receiver Kyle Williams catching a touchdown and kicker Andy Borregales adding his second field goal of the half. With this win, New England extended their streak to 10 consecutive victories, leaving both teams heading into a late-season bye.

Koo, a Georgia Southern alumnus born on August 3, 1994, remains under scrutiny as the Giants look to address their special teams issues. His 2025 regular season stats will be closely watched as New York evaluates its options moving forward. As the season progresses, the Giants’ special teams unit must improve if they hope to remain competitive, and all eyes will be on whether Koo can rebound from this highly publicized error.
