Report: Devils Show Strong Interest in Islanders’ Brock Nelson

On March 5, the New Jersey Devils announced that their star center, Jack Hughes, will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery, leaving the team without its top player. Despite this setback, the Devils remain focused on strengthening their roster ahead of the NHL trade deadline.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported that New Jersey is actively pursuing Brock Nelson of the New York Islanders, who will become an unrestricted free agent after the season. According to LeBrun, the Devils have made their interest known to their division rivals: “New Jersey, now that Jack Hughes is out for the year, definitely interested [in Nelson],” LeBrun shared. “They phoned today.”

While Nelson may not replicate Hughes’ elite production, he would still provide a significant boost to the Devils’ top six. At 33, Nelson is currently the best center available on the trade market.

This season, Nelson has tallied 20 goals and 43 points in 61 games for the Islanders, along with a plus-2 rating. He has also scored 34 or more goals in each of the last three seasons, showcasing his scoring ability.

The Devils’ pursuit of Nelson could hinge on the Islanders’ efforts to extend his contract, as time runs out for them to finalize a deal.
