LSU just landed the biggest recruiting win of the 2026 cycle.
Five-star defensive tackle Lamar Brown, the No. 1 overall player in the ESPN 300, announced his commitment to LSU on Thursday, giving Brian Kelly and the Tigers a massive in-state recruiting victory that will ripple across the college football landscape.
The 6-foot-5, 285-pound wrecking ball from Erwinville, Louisiana made it official live on ESPN’s SportsCenter, choosing to stay home during a ceremony at University Laboratory School — located just a mile from Tiger Stadium. In doing so, Brown becomes the highest-rated LSU commit since Leonard Fournette in 2014.
“Everyone dreams of playing at Tiger Stadium,” Brown told ESPN. “I’m blessed to say I’ll get that chance. Not many kids from Baton Rouge get to do this.”
A Recruiting Battle to the Final Hour
While the local ties pointed to LSU from the start, this was no easy win. Texas A&M mounted a serious campaign to land Brown, hosting him eight times after June 1, 2024, and deploying head coach Mike Elko along with defensive line coaches Sean Spencer and Tony Jerod-Eddie to recruit him for over two years.

Sources say Brown remained undecided until late Wednesday night, with both the Aggies and Tigers confident in their chances just hours before the announcement. A&M had even pulled ahead at one point, especially after Brown posted a cryptic “Think this one close the book…” following a mid-June visit to College Station.
But in a dramatic twist, Brown rescheduled a canceled visit to LSU for June 20–22 — and that trip proved decisive.
“They didn’t take it lightly,” Brown said of his time with the Tigers. “They laid everything out: the football, the future after football, the chance to build my brand in my own backyard. It just made sense.”
A Cornerstone for LSU’s 2026 Class
With Brown now on board, LSU’s 2026 class surges into the national spotlight. He’s the Tigers’ first No. 1 overall recruit in over a decade and joins five-star receiver Tristen Keys (No. 10 overall) to form a devastating one-two punch atop LSU’s class, which now sits just outside the Top 10 in ESPN’s class rankings.
Brown becomes LSU’s 10th ESPN 300 commit in the cycle and headlines a stacked defensive haul that includes:
-
DE Trenton Henderson (No. 61)
-
DT Richard Anderson (No. 93)
-
CB Havon Finney Jr. (No. 72)
-
S Aiden Hall (No. 126)
-
CB Dylan Purter (No. 223)
LSU may not be done yet. Four-star DT Deuce Geralds (No. 2 DT in the class) is set to announce his decision on August 2, and four-star OL Darius Gray (No. 73) remains a top priority target.
Brown’s commitment also leaves just four uncommitted five-star recruits in the 2026 class. That includes No. 1 RB Derrek Cooper (No. 7) and TE Kaiden Prothro (No. 19), who is expected to choose between Florida, Georgia, and Texas on Saturday.
A Dominant Force in the Trenches
Initially recruited on both sides of the ball, Brown made the full transition to defense this spring and has all the tools to become a star in the SEC. He’s a versatile, disruptive lineman with 91 tackles and 8 sacks over his past three varsity seasons and projects as a plug-and-play force anywhere across the defensive front.
As the Tigers build a championship-caliber defense, Brown will be the anchor. And now, he’ll do it just a mile from where his journey began.
