Spencer Jones: Rising Outfield Prospect in the Yankees System

Spencer George Jones, born on May 14, 2001 in Encinitas, California, is an active minor league outfielder in the New York Yankees organization. Standing 6’7″ and weighing 240 pounds (201 cm, 108 kg), Jones bats and throws left-handed and is known for his power and athleticism.

Jones was selected 25th overall in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Yankees after a standout junior season at Vanderbilt University. That year, he hit .370 with 12 home runs, 60 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases in 61 games, earning All-SEC second team honors and recognition as the Corvallis Regional Most Outstanding Player. His strong showing at the MLB Draft combine included a 103.6 mph average exit velocity and a top hit of 112.2 mph.

Previously, Jones was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 31st round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of La Costa Canyon High School, but he chose to attend Vanderbilt. In high school, he was a two-time Avocado West Champion, maintained a 4.0 GPA, and won the 2018 CIF San Diego Section Home Run Derby. He also played for the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod League, drawing comparisons to Aaron Judge for his size and skillset.

Since signing with the Yankees, Jones has played across multiple minor league levels as a centerfielder, rightfielder, and leftfielder. His combination of size, speed, and hitting ability makes him one of the most promising prospects in the Yankees’ farm system.
