Ryan was acquired by the Twins from the Tampa Bay Rays in July 2021, alongside Drew Strotman, in exchange for Nelson Cruz and Calvin Faucher. Since joining the Twins, Ryan has consistently delivered strong performances. He made the Opening Day roster for the third time in 2024 and opened the season as the club’s No. 2 starter.
In 2023, Ryan set career highs in starts (29), innings pitched (161.2), and strikeouts (197). He ranked second on the Twins in both strikeouts and innings pitched, and finished eighth in the American League in strikeouts. Notably, he posted a 5.79 strikeout-to-walk ratio (third in the AL) and held left-handed hitters to a .222 average.
Ryan’s 2023 season included a complete-game shutout against Boston on June 22, marking the first Twins complete-game shutout since 2018. He also became the seventh pitcher in franchise history to win his first five starts in a season. Despite an injury that placed him on the 15-day injured list in August, Ryan managed 13 quality starts, just one short of his career high.
Earlier in his MLB career, Ryan made an immediate impact. In his rookie season, he posted a 3.55 ERA with 151 strikeouts over 147 innings, leading all major league rookies in wins and innings pitched. He was named to MLB.com’s 2022 All-Rookie First Team and set a club record for strikeouts by a rookie.
Internationally, Ryan represented Team USA at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, earning a win and maintaining a 1.74 ERA over two starts.
Currently under a one-year, $3 million contract, Ryan has become a mainstay in the Twins’ rotation. As of the 2024 season, he has accumulated over 660 career strikeouts and continues to be a reliable starter for Minnesota.
