Celebrate LAFC’s Victory Over Tigres UANL in the Leagues Cup!
Los Angeles Football Club secured a vital 2-1 victory over Tigres UANL in the final match of the Leagues Cup 2025 group stage at BMO Stadium, Los Angeles. Both teams finished with six points, but their advancement to the quarterfinals now depends on other group results.

LAFC entered the match needing a regulation win to keep quarterfinal hopes alive, following a shootout defeat to Mazatlán and a penalty shootout victory over Pachuca. Tigres, led by new signing Ángel Correa, had been perfect in their opening matches, with Correa scoring four goals in two games and veteran André-Pierre Gignac providing experience off the bench.

The match began with Tigres dominating early possession, as French striker Gignac threatened the LAFC goal twice within the opening 20 minutes. LAFC suffered an early setback when striker Jeremy Ebobisse exited with a hamstring injury, replaced by Timothy Tillman. Tillman made an immediate impact, drawing a penalty after a challenge from Fernando Gorriarán. David Martinez converted from the spot, giving LAFC a 1-0 lead as the crowd at BMO Stadium cheered the arrival of star signing Son Heung-min, who was introduced in the stands following his record $26 million transfer from Tottenham Hotspur.

Tigres responded early in the second half. Substitute Edgar Lopez, who replaced Gignac at halftime, scored with his first touch by heading in a cross from Juan Brunetta after a set piece, leveling the score at 1-1. Despite conceding, LAFC grew more comfortable and regained the lead in the 63rd minute. Marco Delgado intercepted the ball, combining with Frankie Amaya and Artem Smalyakov before Martinez completed his brace with a composed finish past Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán.

Tigres pushed for an equalizer in stoppage time, with Gorriarán coming close with a header in the 95th minute, but LAFC held firm. The result leaves both clubs among the top four in their respective league tables, but their future in the tournament hinges on other match outcomes, as only eight teams (four from each league) progress to the knockout phase.

This win is a significant milestone for LAFC, who have never beaten Tigres in high-stakes competition, falling in both the 2020 Concacaf Champions League Final and the 2023 Campeones Cup. The addition of Son Heung-min adds further intrigue, with his official introduction scheduled for Wednesday.

With the Leagues Cup final set for August 31 and the top three finishers qualifying for the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, both LAFC and Tigres remain in contention but must wait for Phase One to conclude.
