Roman Anthony Signs Massive 8-Year Extension with the Boston Red Sox
Rising star Roman Anthony and the Boston Red Sox are finalizing an eight-year, $130 million contract extension, according to multiple reports. The deal, which includes a club option and performance escalators that could boost its total value to $230 million, will keep Anthony under team control through the 2034 season. This extension signals Boston’s commitment to building around its young talent as the team pushes for postseason contention in the American League.

At just 21 years old, Anthony has made a swift and significant impact since his MLB debut on June 9. The former second-round pick out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was the No. 1 overall prospect in baseball, and his transition to the majors has exceeded expectations. Through his first 46 games, Anthony has slashed .283/.400/.428 with two home runs, 19 RBIs, and 15 doubles, boasting an impressive 132 OPS+. His advanced metrics are equally eye-catching: an average exit velocity of 94.1 mph, a bat speed of 74.4 mph, and a hard-hit rate of 58%—all elite figures, even in a limited sample size. His approach at the plate is mature beyond his years, as evidenced by a 13.7% walk rate and a strong in-zone contact percentage, comparable to top prospects James Wood and Junior Caminero.

Anthony’s minor league track record provided plenty of reason for optimism. In 119 games across Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, he hit .291 with a .396 OBP and .498 SLG, earning First-Team All-Star honors from Baseball America and recognition as the Red Sox Minor League Offensive Player of the Year. He led Portland in home runs, slugging, OPS, walks, and extra-base hits, and made his Triple-A debut at age 20. Notably, in a 35-game Triple-A stretch, he recorded a .983 OPS and walked as often as he struck out—a rare feat for a player so young at that level (Roman Anthony Minor League Stats).

The Red Sox have surged since Anthony’s arrival, going an AL-best 32-16 and capturing the top AL Wild Card spot while riding a seven-game win streak. Although Anthony is currently sidelined with mid-back tightness, he holds an active eight-game hitting streak and remains a central figure in Boston’s postseason push. His strong performance has propelled him into Rookie of the Year consideration, with betting odds of +2000 according to DraftKings.

Boston’s aggressive approach to locking up its young core continues under chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, who previously secured extensions for Ceddanne Rafaela and Kristian Campbell. Anthony was not set to reach free agency until after 2031, but this extension extends his stay by at least three more years. The deal also comes on the heels of the unpopular trade of Rafael Devers, offering Red Sox fans renewed hope for the future as Anthony emerges as the centerpiece of the next competitive Boston squad.
