Portland Timbers drew 1-1 with Club América in their final Phase One match of Leagues Cup 2025 at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas on August 6. The result leaves the Timbers unbeaten in the group stage but uncertain of advancement as they await other tournament results.
Portland opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Ariel Lassiter capitalized on a precise through ball from David Da Costa, chipping the ball past América’s goalkeeper. This marked Lassiter’s second goal of the competition, making him the first Timbers player to score multiple times in this year’s Leagues Cup. Da Costa, who assisted, recorded his ninth assist and 14th goal contribution across all competitions in 2025.
Club América responded in the 53rd minute. Brian Rodríguez delivered a well-placed corner, which Ramón Juárez headed into the far corner to equalize. Despite both sides creating further chances—América outshot Portland 20 to 6—the match ended level after regulation. In the penalty shootout, América prevailed, denying Portland the extra point.
Defensively, Portland’s Maxime Crépeau made five saves, and the team conceded just one goal throughout Phase One, tying them with the New York Red Bulls for the fewest in the tournament. Portland finished group play 2-0-1 (7 points), maintaining an unbeaten record and a +5 goal difference.
Portland has a history of advancing past the first round in previous Leagues Cup campaigns (2023, 2024). The club now waits for the remaining results to see if they progress to the quarterfinals, where the top four MLS and top four Liga MX teams advance. The highest finishers will earn spots in the Concacaf Champions League, with a chance to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Timbers will resume MLS play on August 9 against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium. Full match highlights and additional features are available on the official MLS website.
