Liz Cambage Dominates the WNBA and Inspires Off the Court

Australian basketball star Liz Cambage has solidified her status as one of the most dominant players in the history of the WNBA, combining elite scoring ability with a strong defensive presence across several seasons. Known for her imposing 6-foot-8 (203 cm) frame and athletic prowess, Cambage has consistently set herself apart in both domestic and international play.

Drafted second overall by the Tulsa Shock in the 2011 WNBA Draft, Cambage quickly made an impact, earning a spot on the WNBA All-Rookie Team and her first All-Star selection in her debut season. Over her career, she has accumulated four WNBA All-Star selections (2011, 2018, 2019, 2021) and has twice been named to All-WNBA teams, including a First Team nod in 2018. Cambage was also the runner-up in MVP voting that same year, underlining her influence on the court (Liz Cambage WNBA Stats).

Perhaps Cambage’s most iconic moment came on July 17, 2018, when she set the WNBA single-game scoring record with 53 points against the New York Liberty. In that historic performance, she shot an incredible 17-of-22 from the field (including 4-of-5 from three), and added 15-of-16 free throws, alongside 10 rebounds and 5 blocks (Liz Cambage on ESPN).

Throughout her WNBA tenure, Cambage has ranked among the league’s best in a range of statistical categories. Heading into the 2022 season, she was 9th in WNBA history for defensive rebounds per game and 10th for rebounds per game. Her efficiency is equally impressive, having ranked 8th all-time in field goal percentage and 9th in blocks per game as of 2021.

During her time with the Las Vegas Aces, Cambage was a key contributor, finishing 19th in scoring, 10th in rebounding, and 6th in field goal percentage in the 2021 season, while ranking 4th in blocked shots. She also led the team in scoring and rebounding multiple times, and posted seven double-doubles that year. Her postseason performances have been equally strong, with multiple double-doubles and a playoff career-high of 28 points.

Beyond the WNBA, Cambage’s career has included stints in Australia and China, where she won league championships and regularly led her teams in scoring, rebounding, and blocks. Internationally, she’s represented Australia at major tournaments, further showcasing her talent on the world stage.

Off the court, Cambage is known for her activism and candid discussions about mental health, as well as her presence as a DJ and model. She remains an influential figure in women’s basketball, both for her record-breaking performances and her willingness to speak out on important issues.
