Roman Anthony Impresses as He Joins the Boston Red Sox
Roman Anthony, a promising outfielder and designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox, continues to impress in his professional career. Born on May 13, 2004, in West Palm Beach, FL, Anthony was selected by Boston in the second round (79th overall) of the 2022 MLB Draft from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. At 6’3″ and 200 lbs, he is recognized for his athleticism and left-handed batting.

In the 2023 minor league season, Anthony split time between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, appearing in 119 games. He posted a .291 batting average with a .396 on-base percentage, .498 slugging, and .894 OPS (132-for-454), adding 32 doubles, 4 triples, and 18 home runs. His performance earned him recognition as a Baseball America First-Team All-Star and selection to the All-MiLB Prospect Team First Team.

Anthony led the Eastern League in slugging (.489) and OPS (.856), and was named an Eastern League All-Star. He also claimed victory in the Futures Skills Showcase at the All-Star Futures Game and was chosen as an inactive reserve for the event. Among Boston Red Sox minor leaguers, Anthony tied for first in doubles, was second in hits, runs (93), extra-base hits (54), and total bases (226), third in walks (79), and tied for fifth in home runs.

After making his Triple-A debut on August 11, Anthony quickly adjusted, leading the International League in on-base percentage (.463), walks (31), and runs scored (33) from that point through the end of the season. He was named Red Sox Minor League Offensive Player of the Year, a South Atlantic League Post-Season All-Star, and a Baseball America Minor League and High Class A All-Star.

Anthony’s earlier professional stints included Single-A Salem, High-A Greenville, and Double-A Portland, where he hit .278 with 27 doubles, 4 triples, 14 home runs, and an .869 OPS over 106 games. Notably, he made 68 starts in center field, 18 in right field, one in left field, and 19 as designated hitter.

His advanced metrics are equally impressive: in 2025, Anthony registered an average exit velocity of 94.4 mph, a hard hit rate of 57.7%, a weighted on-base average (wOBA) of .372, and a barrel rate of 13.4%.

Now in his first MLB season with the Boston Red Sox, Anthony has maintained a .283 average, with 58 hits and 4 home runs so far. His contract with Boston is reported as 8 years/$130M, with a team option for the 34th year of his career.
