Padres Propel to Victory Over Rockies with Merrill’s Home Run
Jackson Merrill’s home run and a dominant outing from Randy Vásquez propelled the San Diego Padres to a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night at Petco Park. The victory opened a four-game series and helped San Diego close the gap in the National League West standings. Merrill broke the deadlock with his 11th homer of the season, launching an opposite-field shot off McCade Brown with two outs in the fourth inning. The blast gave the Padres a 2-0 lead, following a third-inning RBI single by Luis Arraez that brought home Freddy Fermin. Randy Vásquez delivered his best performance of the year, striking out a career-high nine batters over six shutout innings. He allowed just four hits and did not issue a walk, improving to 5-6 on the season. The bullpen held firm, with Robert Suarez retiring the side on just nine pitches in the ninth for his NL-leading 37th save. With this win, San Diego moved within 2.5 games of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers and extended their lead over the New York Mets for the second NL Wild Card spot. The Padres have now won four of their last eleven games, rebounding after recent series losses. Colorado’s offense struggled, managing only four hits. McCade Brown (0-4) took the loss, giving up both runs across four innings. The Rockies, who sit at the bottom of the division, were unable to capitalize on limited opportunities. Looking ahead, the series continues Friday night with Colorado’s Tanner Gordon (5-6, 6.60 ERA) set to face Padres left-hander JP Sears (8-10, 5.01 ERA).
