Manchester City Kicks Off UEFA Champions League Campaign Against Napoli
Manchester City began their 2025/26 UEFA Champions League campaign by hosting Napoli at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday, September 18. City manager Pep Guardiola fielded an unchanged starting eleven for this opening group stage clash, signaling confidence in his squad that recently suffered a heavy domestic defeat against Arsenal.

Napoli, reigning Serie A champions, arrived in Manchester for their first Champions League meeting with City since 2017. The match featured several high-profile storylines, including Kevin De Bruyne’s return to the Etihad and the tactical battle between Guardiola and Napoli’s experienced manager, Antonio Conte.

The early stages saw Manchester City controlling possession. In the 10th minute, Jérémy Doku won a free kick on the left wing, providing City with an attacking opportunity. Shortly after, Phil Foden delivered a dangerous corner that found Doku unmarked at the far post, but the chance was not converted as Doku failed to attempt a header and lost possession.

The Champions League opener was broadcast live on multiple platforms, including Paramount+ in the United States, TNT Sports 2 and discovery+ in the United Kingdom, and DAZN in Canada. Fans in Mexico could follow the match via HBO Max, Caliente TV, and Amazon Prime Video.

Looking ahead, Manchester City will face Monaco in their next Champions League fixture, while Napoli will host Sporting CP at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on October 1. Before then, City are set for domestic matches against Huddersfield Town and Burnley, and Napoli will meet Milan and newly-promoted Pisa in Serie A.
