Phillies Overcome Early Deficit to Defeat Diamondbacks 8-2
The Philadelphia Phillies strengthened their playoff position with a decisive 8-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Friday night. The loss was a blow to the Diamondbacks’ postseason hopes, leaving them three games behind the New York Mets for the final National League wild card spot with only eight games left in the regular season. Alec Bohm made an immediate impact in his return from the injured list, driving in three runs for the Phillies. Philadelphia overcame an early 2-0 deficit, tying the game on Harrison Bader’s solo home run in the fifth and taking the lead for good in the sixth inning on Weston Wilson’s RBI single. Nick Castellanos extended the lead with a two-run homer in the eighth, and added another RBI in the ninth. Bader finished with three hits, including his homer. Arizona started strong, with Ketel Marte launching a solo shot in the first inning and Blaze Alexander adding an RBI grounder. However, the Diamondbacks’ bats went quiet after the third inning, managing only two hits the rest of the way. Marte was a bright spot, collecting three of Arizona’s seven hits. Phillies reliever Walker Buehler delivered 3 2/3 scoreless innings, his second appearance for Philadelphia after being released by the Red Sox. Buehler ran into trouble in the eighth, loading the bases, but left-hander Tanner Banks came in to retire Jordan Lawlar and end the threat. Taijuan Walker started for the Phillies, allowing two runs over four innings. For Arizona, Ryne Nelson gave up two runs in five innings. The Phillies have now won 16 of their last 21 games and recently clinched the NL East division for the second consecutive year. The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, saw their wild card chances diminish further after both the Mets and Reds won earlier in the day. Looking ahead, the Diamondbacks will send Zac Gallen to the mound to face Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola in the next game of the series.
