Phillies Defeat Twins 3-1 as Nola Reaches Milestone
The Philadelphia Phillies secured a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night, a game that not only boosted their NL East champion credentials but also saw Aaron Nola etch his name deeper into franchise history. Nola took a perfect game into the sixth inning and, with his ninth strikeout, surpassed Hall of Famer Robin Roberts for the second-most strikeouts in Phillies history, now trailing only the legendary Steve Carlton. Nola’s performance was dominant: he allowed just two hits and no walks over eight innings, striking out nine. Despite pitching through ankle and rib injuries and enduring a season marked by inconsistency—his worst statistically since joining the Phillies in 2015—Nola reminded everyone of his postseason pedigree. With 16 playoff starts in the past three years, his experience could prove invaluable, even as manager Rob Thomson considers using him in a bullpen role for the upcoming NL Division Series, a position Nola has never filled in 285 regular-season appearances. The Phillies struck early, with Alec Bohm driving in a run via sacrifice fly in the first inning. Edmundo Sosa, fresh off a three-homer game that helped set a franchise record for team home runs, added a solo shot in the fifth. Brandon Marsh’s RBI double in the sixth extended the lead. The Twins finally broke Nola’s perfect run when Christian Vázquez homered to make it 2-1, but the Phillies bullpen, anchored by closer Jhoan Duran (32nd save), shut the door. On the mound for the Twins, Joe Ryan (13-10) gave up five hits and two earned runs over five innings, striking out nine. The Phillies’ win improved their home record to 54-25 and overall to 95-65, while the Twins fell to 69-91. The night was also marked by a special celebration: the Phillies honored Bobby Shantz on his 100th birthday. Shantz, a former AL MVP with the Philadelphia Athletics, is the oldest living Phillie, All-Star, and second-oldest MLB player. Looking forward, former Phillies pitcher Mick Abel is set to face his former team for the first time since being traded to Minnesota. Abel, who tied a Phillies record for strikeouts in a debut earlier this season, will square off against Phillies left-hander Ranger Suárez (12-7, 3.12 ERA).
