Mason Taylor Impresses as He Joins the New York Jets
Mason Taylor, a 21-year-old tight end from LSU, was selected by the New York Jets with the 42nd overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Taylor enters the NFL as one of the youngest players at his position and is expected to compete for a significant role in his rookie season, according to ESPN. Taylor made his mark at LSU, becoming the program’s all-time leader in receptions (129) and receiving yards (1,308) by a tight end. He recorded at least one catch in 28 consecutive games and was known for his reliable hands, precise route-running, and effectiveness as both a receiver and blocker. Notably, 72 of his 129 catches resulted in first downs, and he was named to the Freshman All-SEC team in 2022. His football pedigree is notable—Mason is the son of Hall of Famer Jason Taylor and nephew of Hall of Famer Zach Thomas. He opted to forgo his senior season and enter the draft, where the Jets saw potential for immediate impact. Taylor impressed during rookie minicamp and organized team activities (OTAs), including a standout 20-yard reception in his preseason debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand praised his rapid development and adaptability, indicating that Taylor is in a strong position to contribute early. With a combination of size (6’5″, 255 lbs), athleticism, and family legacy, Mason Taylor is viewed as a promising addition to the Jets’ offense. His transition from a record-setting college career at LSU to the NFL will be closely watched, especially as New York looks to leverage his skills in the passing game and as a blocker.
