Xavien Howard Retires from NFL After Four Games with Colts
Indianapolis Colts cornerback Xavien Howard has unexpectedly announced his retirement just four games into the 2025 NFL season. The decision from the 32-year-old veteran came only three days after he played 66 defensive snaps in a tough matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, where Puka Nacua caught five of six targets for 71 yards and a crucial game-tying touchdown over Howard, according to Pro Football Focus. Howard joined the Colts as a free agent in August 2025, following a series of injuries at the cornerback position. Quickly earning a starting role, he played alongside Charvarius Ward and Kenny Moore II. Across four games with Indianapolis, Howard totaled 11 tackles and recovered one fumble, but did not record an interception. His performance was a mix of highs and lows: he allowed 16 catches on 22 targets (a 72.7% reception rate, the highest of his career), including a difficult outing in Week 2 versus the Denver Broncos where he surrendered eight receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Despite these challenges, he limited receivers from the Dolphins and Titans to just five combined yards in those contests. Howard’s decision to retire was described as putting “family first,” emphasizing personal priorities over his NFL career. The Colts responded by placing him on the reserve/retired list and promoting safety Trey Washington from the practice squad to the active roster. Prior to his stint in Indianapolis, Howard spent eight seasons with the Miami Dolphins, where he established himself as one of the league’s premier cornerbacks. Notably, he led the NFL in interceptions twice—snagging seven in 2018 and an impressive ten in 2020, a year he also earned first-team AP All-Pro honors. Over his nine-year career, Howard collected 29 interceptions and was selected to four Pro Bowls. His 2020 campaign remains a standout in modern NFL history: 10 interceptions, 20 passes defended, a forced fumble, and 51 total tackles, as highlighted on his official X (Twitter) account. Howard’s retirement marks the end of an era for one of the NFL’s most productive and opportunistic defensive backs of the last decade. With a resume boasting multiple league-leading statistics and All-Pro recognition, his impact will be felt for years to come both in Indianapolis and Miami.
