Ranked No. 5 in the nation, Penn State (1-0-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten) opened with two goals in the first period, but surrendered the lead during a difficult second, falling behind 3-2. The team rebounded in the third, scoring four unanswered goals, led by standout performances from Charlie Cerrato and Matt DiMarsico.
Cerrato, a sophomore and recent second-round Carolina Hurricanes draft pick, finished the night with two goals and three assists for a career-high five points. DiMarsico delivered his first collegiate hat trick, including the game-tying and go-ahead goals in the third period. Freshman Gavin McKenna impressed in his debut, recording two assists and playing a key role in the opening goal.
The Nittany Lions’ power play went 2-for-5, with the penalty kill effective on five out of six attempts. Goaltender Kevin Reidler, a transfer from Omaha, made 35 saves in his Penn State debut, holding off Arizona State’s attack in crucial moments.
Despite a penalty-filled contest—17 combined infractions—Penn State’s top-six forwards combined for six goals and 11 assists. The win signals a strong start for a team coming off a Frozen Four appearance and aiming to contend for another Big Ten title.
Penn State will look for a series sweep over Arizona State on Saturday, October 4, again at Mullett Arena. For updates and more details, follow Penn State Men’s Hockey on Twitter and visit the official 2025-26 schedule.
