Cleveland Browns Edges Minnesota Vikings 17-14 in Thrilling Week 5 Showdown
In an NFL Week 5 matchup held at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Cleveland Browns edged out the Minnesota Vikings 17-14 in a tightly contested game. The Browns entered halftime with a 10-7 lead after Andre Szmyt’s 31-yard field goal just before the break. Rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, making his first start for Cleveland, delivered two touchdown passes, including a crucial 9-yard strike to David Njoku in the third quarter. Minnesota’s Carson Wentz, starting for the third straight week in place of J.J. McCarthy, finished 13 of 22 for 156 yards but was hampered by turnovers and heavy defensive pressure. The Vikings’ running back issues continued, with both Jordan Mason and his replacement Zavier Scott losing fumbles, the latter coming on Minnesota’s first play of a critical fourth-quarter drive. Despite Mason scoring a 3-yard rushing touchdown earlier, the Vikings’ offense struggled to maintain momentum, particularly against Cleveland’s defensive front anchored by Myles Garrett. Cam Akers made a rare highlight for Minnesota, throwing a 32-yard touchdown pass to Josh Oliver in the first quarter – the team’s first non-quarterback passing TD since 2008. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson led the Vikings with 102 receiving yards on six catches, while Cleveland’s rookie Quinshon Judkins paced the ground game with 95 yards on 19 carries. Both teams’ offensive lines were depleted by injuries, and each squad was forced to adjust on the fly, with Minnesota missing three starters up front and the Browns fielding their ninth starting quarterback since 2022. The Browns’ defense, which entered the game leading the NFL in fewest yards allowed per game, lived up to its billing, forcing two turnovers and limiting the Vikings to just 261 total yards. Penalties and missed opportunities defined much of the contest. Minnesota committed six penalties for 40 yards, while Cleveland had nine for 68. A missed 51-yard field goal by Will Reichard in the fourth quarter dashed the Vikings’ hopes for a late comeback. The victory lifted the Browns to 2-3, while the Vikings fell to 2-3 on the season. The game was part of the NFL’s ongoing international series and marked Minnesota’s second overseas appearance this year.
