Detroit Tigers Edge Mariners 3-2 in Dramatic Game 1 of Division Series
In a dramatic opening to the American League Division Series, the Detroit Tigers edged out the Seattle Mariners 3-2 in 11 innings at T-Mobile Park. This marks Detroit’s first extra-innings postseason victory since Game 1 of the 2012 ALCS against the Yankees, signaling a significant moment in their playoff campaign.

The tension ran high throughout the night as both teams fought for every run. The Mariners struck first with a solo home run from Julio Rodríguez in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a high fastball from rookie Troy Melton. But the Tigers responded in the fifth: Kerry Carpenter launched a two-run homer—his fifth career home run off Seattle’s George Kirby—putting Detroit ahead 2-1. This feat made Carpenter just the fourth player in MLB history to record five or more hits off a particular pitcher, all of them home runs.

Seattle answered back in the sixth when Rodríguez delivered an RBI single, tying the game at 2-2. Both bullpens locked in from there, with Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz tossing two scoreless innings—his first such outing since his rookie year in 2019. However, Detroit’s relievers were equally dominant, with Will Vest providing two perfect innings and Keider Montero securing his first MLB save.

The defining moment came in the 11th inning. With two outs and Spencer Torkelson on second base after a leadoff walk and a wild pitch, Zach McKinstry broke his 0-for-17 slump by singling up the middle off Carlos Vargas’ 99.6 mph sinker. Torkelson raced home, giving the Tigers the decisive edge. As McKinstry put it postgame: “All year long, I feel like we were either down or we were up. We’re up right now, and we’re getting a lot of wins. Things are going our way.”

Historically, teams that win Game 1 on the road in the current 2-2-1 ALDS format have advanced 73.9% of the time (34 of 46 series). The Tigers now have a chance to capitalize on this momentum with AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal set to start Game 2. Skubal was dominant in the Wild Card Series and carries a 2.03 ERA in four postseason outings. The Mariners will counter with right-hander Luis Castillo, who owns a 1.83 ERA across nearly 20 playoff innings.

Despite a season where Detroit nearly squandered a large AL Central lead, they’ve found resilience at the right time, having already knocked out the Guardians in the Wild Card Series. For Seattle, who clinched their first AL West crown since 2001, the loss marks a second consecutive extra-innings postseason defeat at home. The Tigers and Mariners have never met before in the playoffs, and the winner of this series will advance with a shot at history: Detroit seeking its first World Series title since 1984, and Seattle still aiming for its first-ever Fall Classic appearance.

With Skubal taking the mound in Game 2, the Tigers are favored according to the latest odds (Tigers -128, Mariners +105). Both teams will be looking for a critical edge as the series continues in Seattle.
