Dowdle, who joined the Panthers on a one-year, $6.25 million deal after a productive stint with the Dallas Cowboys, now ranks among the top 20 NFL running backs in carries, rushing yards, receptions, touches, and scrimmage yards this season. He has appeared in 16 games, and his current campaign includes 289 rushing yards and 51 carries through five games, contributing significantly to Carolina’s offense.
The 27-year-old running back, born in Asheville, North Carolina, played college football at the University of South Carolina. After going undrafted in 2020, Dowdle signed with the Dallas Cowboys, but injuries limited his availability during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Despite these setbacks, he surpassed 1,000 rushing yards with Dallas and was a consistent contributor when healthy.
Dowdle’s breakout against Miami featured explosive runs, including gains of 53, 43, and 25 yards, as well as two short-yardage touchdowns. His performance drew attention ahead of the Panthers’ Week 6 matchup against his former team, with Dowdle telling reporters the Cowboys should “buckle up.”
Looking ahead, Dowdle’s emergence as a reliable RB1 provides stability for Carolina, especially while Hubbard’s status remains uncertain. If Dowdle maintains this form, he could play a crucial role in the Panthers’ playoff hopes for the 2025 season.
