Trey Yesavage Excels as a Rising Baseball Star for the Blue Jays
Trey Yesavage, a right-handed pitcher standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 225 pounds, was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round (20th overall) of the 2024 MLB Draft. Drafted out of East Carolina University, Yesavage quickly rose through the ranks after beginning his college career as a reliever and later moving into the starting rotation. He earned consensus second-team All-American honors and was named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year in his junior season.

In 2023, Yesavage ranked among the NCAA Division I leaders with a 2.03 ERA (4th), 145 strikeouts (5th), a .154 opponents’ batting average (2nd), and 11 wins (tied-4th). Despite suffering a collapsed lung before the AAC Conference Tournament, he returned to pitch 7 1/3 innings of one-run baseball in the NCAA Greenville Regional, further solidifying his draft stock. The Blue Jays signed him for $4,177,500.

Yesavage features a four-pitch mix, headlined by a fastball that sits at 93-95 mph and peaks at 98 mph with excellent carry from a high release point. His mid-80s slider/cutter generates heavy swings and misses, and he complements it with a low-80s splitter and spike curveball. His pitching arsenal is rated: Fastball 60, Slider 60, Splitter 60, Curveball 50, Control 50, Overall 55 on the scouting scale. In 2025, he posted an average exit velocity against of 94 mph, a hard-hit rate of 61.5%, and a wOBA of .275.

Yesavage’s strong physical presence and improved fastball command fueled his quick ascent from Single-A to Double-A in his first full pro season, consistently racking up strikeouts at each level. Despite some early career concerns about pitch location, he has refined his control and now projects as a potential mid-rotation starter for Toronto.

East Carolina has now produced top MLB Draft pitching talent in three of the last four years, with Yesavage following Gavin Williams (2021) and Carson Whisenhunt (2022) into the professional ranks.
