Delay Game 3 Start as Mariners and Tigers Await Weather Conditions
The start of Game 3 of the American League Division Series between the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners at Comerica Park has been officially delayed due to inclement weather in Detroit. The announcement came approximately 45 minutes before the scheduled first pitch at 4:08 p.m. ET (1:08 p.m. PT), with rain continuing to fall and the field covered by a tarp. Updates regarding a new start time will be provided as conditions improve (ALDS Game 3 between Mariners and Tigers delayed due to rain). The series is tied 1-1 after the Mariners’ tense 3-2 victory in Game 2, highlighted by a decisive RBI double from Julio Rodríguez in the eighth inning. Rodríguez has been a standout performer this postseason, extending his streak of games with an extra-base hit to five, the longest such run in Mariners history and the longest ever by a player under 25. Game 2 Recap. Both teams are eager for the pivotal Game 3, as the current 2-2-1 format of the Division Series means the winner of the next two games in Detroit will have the upper hand. Historically, teams that split the first two games on the road and return home for Games 3 and 4 have advanced 62.5% of the time. The Mariners are set to start Logan Gilbert (6-4, 3.44 ERA), making his playoff debut after being pushed back to Game 3 for matchup reasons. Gilbert has faced the Tigers twice this season, recording 10 strikeouts over five innings in April and nine strikeouts with two unearned runs over 5 1/3 innings at Comerica Park in July. The Tigers counter with Jack Flaherty (8-15, 4.64 ERA), who is coming off a strong Wild Card Series and has proven effective when pitching on four days’ rest (3.09 ERA, 11.5 K/9). Lineups for Game 3 remain largely consistent with previous games. Seattle features Rodríguez in center field and Jorge Polanco, who hit two home runs in Game 2, at second base. Detroit’s lineup is led by Kerry Carpenter in right field and Gleyber Torres at second base. Notably, Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor, awaiting the birth of his first child, is in the lineup but could depart at any moment. Both bullpens benefit from Monday’s off-day after heavy workloads in the opening games. The Mariners will rely on leverage arms Eduard Bazardo, Gabe Speier, Matt Brash, and Andrés Muñoz, while Detroit’s rested bullpen is anchored by Kyle Finnegan. The Tigers return home for their first game at Comerica Park since September 21, following extended time on the road. Their 46-35 home record this season ranks among the AL’s best. The Mariners, meanwhile, overcame late-season road struggles to clinch the AL West and have recent playoff road success to draw upon. First pitch will be announced once weather conditions allow. Fans can watch the game on FS1 or stream via MLB.TV with appropriate authentication. For Canadian viewers, Sportsnet and TVA Sports provide coverage in English and French, respectively.
