Navigate Injuries as Chargers Adjust Running Back Depth Chart for 2025 NFL Season
The Los Angeles Chargers have released their unofficial depth chart ahead of Week 5 of the 2025 NFL season, but a series of injuries has dramatically altered the team’s running back situation. Omarion Hampton, the Chargers’ leading rusher, was placed on injured reserve after suffering an ankle injury, joining Najee Harris on the sideline. Both will be out for a minimum of four games, leaving the backfield in flux as Los Angeles prepares to face the Washington Commanders.

Hampton, who had emerged as a key contributor with two touchdowns and the most rushing yards on the team, was injured during the Week 5 matchup. Harris, who managed 63 rushing yards in three games this season before his own injury, remains unavailable. Head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed the severity of Hampton’s injury, stating, “Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh said RB Omarion Hampton will be placed on injured reserve, sidelining him a minimum of four games due to his ankle injury,” according to Adam Schefter.

With both starters sidelined, the Chargers’ running back depth chart is now led by Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal. Haskins, in his third NFL season and second with Los Angeles after beginning his career with the Tennessee Titans, recorded 89 rushing yards and two touchdowns last season. Vidal, now in his second year with the Chargers, has yet to find the end zone as a runner but contributed 155 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown in his rookie campaign.

The team also has Amar Johnson on the practice squad. Johnson, a standout at South Dakota State with 1,222 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns last year, could be elevated if depth becomes an issue.

Despite these setbacks, the Chargers remain 3-1 on the season as they return home to SoFi Stadium. Their offensive lineup features Justin Herbert at quarterback, Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston as the primary wide receivers, and Scott Matlock at fullback. The offensive line remains intact, with Joe Alt and Trey Pipkins III at tackle, and Zion Johnson, Bradley Bozeman, and Mekhi Becton on the interior.

The situation at running back will be closely monitored as Los Angeles navigates a challenging portion of its schedule. The performance of Haskins and Vidal will be critical as the team seeks to maintain momentum in the AFC West.
