Penguins Dominate Rangers and Spoil Sullivan’s Debut
The Pittsburgh Penguins opened their 2025-26 NHL season with a commanding 3-0 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, spoiling former Penguins coach Mike Sullivan‘s debut behind the Rangers’ bench. The win also marked a memorable first game for new Penguins head coach Dan Muse, who replaced Sullivan in Pittsburgh earlier this year. Justin Brazeau was the standout performer for the Penguins, netting two goals—including the game-winner late in the first period and an empty-netter in the final minutes. Goaltender Arturs Silovs, acquired from Vancouver in the offseason, stopped all 25 shots for his first NHL regular-season shutout, becoming only the second goalie in franchise history to record a shutout in his Penguins debut. The Penguins controlled the tempo early, with Brazeau’s first goal coming off a faceoff win by veteran center Evgeni Malkin, who tallied two assists on the night. Pittsburgh outshot New York 15-5 in the third period and stifled the Rangers’ power play, holding them 0-for-2 with the man advantage. In the closing minutes, Blake Lizotte added another empty-net goal, sealing a night where the Penguins’ experience and defensive discipline were on full display. For the Rangers, expectations were high with the arrival of Sullivan, who led Pittsburgh to back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. However, the offense sputtered, with captain J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad unable to solve Silovs despite Zibanejad’s seven shots on goal. New York’s inability to generate sustained pressure or capitalize on power plays echoed issues from their previous campaign, as noted by Sullivan and several Rangers players in post-game remarks. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin made 27 saves to keep the score close, but his efforts weren’t enough to overcome defensive lapses and a lack of finish up front. The contest also saw a historic milestone: Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and Kris Letang became the first trio in North American pro sports history to play 20 seasons together with the same franchise. For context, the Penguins are projected by many analysts to be outside the playoff picture this year, making their dominant opening night performance even more impressive. Looking ahead, the Penguins will host the New York Islanders, while the Rangers seek to regroup on the road against the Buffalo Sabres.
