Kerkering, drafted by the Phillies in the fifth round of the 2022 MLB Draft from the University of South Florida, has quickly become a key figure in Philadelphia’s bullpen. In his first full MLB season, he appeared in 64 games, posting a 4.63 strikeout-to-walk ratio and finishing among the National League’s top relievers in ground ball rate and fastball velocity. His 2024 campaign included a pair of nine-inning scoreless streaks and 74 strikeouts, solidifying his reputation as a reliable arm.
After the error that ended the Phillies’ season, teammates Realmuto and Nick Castellanos immediately consoled the 24-year-old right-hander. Phillies manager Rob Thomson also offered words of support, emphasizing the team-first mentality: “He just got caught up in the moment a little bit. We win as a team and we lose as a team.” Kerkering acknowledged the mistake, telling reporters, “It just hit off my foot. Once that pressure got to me, I thought there’s a faster throw to J.T., little quicker throw than trying to cross-body it to Bryce. Just a bad throw.”
Despite the difficult finish, Kerkering’s rapid rise remains notable. He made his MLB debut in 2023, less than two years after being drafted, and quickly earned high-leverage opportunities. He was named a Baseball America Minor League All-Star and received the Paul Owens Award as the Phillies’ top Minor League pitcher.
This postseason was only the second in MLB history to end on a walk-off error, highlighting the rarity and intensity of the moment. As the Phillies look to regroup, Kerkering’s teammates and coaches remain confident in his long-term potential. “One play shouldn’t define someone’s career,” veteran Kyle Schwarber said, echoing the clubhouse sentiment.
