Detroit goaltender Cam Talbot delivered a strong performance, stopping 21 shots to anchor his team. The Red Wings found scoring from multiple sources, with Mason Appleton netting two crucial goals. Appleton opened the scoring just over two minutes into the second period, capitalizing on a snap shot that set the tone for the rest of the game. Later, he secured the result with an empty-net goal in the final two minutes.
Detroit’s offense continued to pressure the Panthers, and veteran Patrick Kane added a power-play tally at 9:36 of the second period, firing home from the right side. Michael Rasmussen also contributed with an empty-netter to seal the win. For the Panthers, Brad Marchand managed the lone goal, scoring on a wraparound late in the second frame. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky matched Talbot’s 21 saves but couldn’t hold off Detroit’s attack.
The Panthers entered the matchup with an impressive start, having claimed home victories over Chicago, Philadelphia, and Ottawa, but their first road game exposed their injury-related vulnerabilities. Florida is currently without several key players, including defenseman Dmitry Kulikov, who underwent surgery and is projected to miss five months, as well as forwards Aleksander Barkov (knee injury, out at least seven months) and Matthew Tkachuk (torn adductor, possible December return). Uvis Balinskis filled in on defense, while Tobias Bjornfot was recalled from the AHL to provide depth.
For the Red Wings, the victory marks their third straight win after dropping their season opener to Montreal. They swept a home-and-home series with Toronto before this statement win over Florida. Next up, Detroit will host the Tampa Bay Lightning, while Florida continues its road swing against the New Jersey Devils.
