Giants Rookie RB Cam Skattebo Suffers Serious Ankle Injury
New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo suffered a dislocated right ankle midway through the second quarter of Sunday’s Week 8 game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia. The injury occurred after a second-quarter pass from quarterback Jaxson Dart, when Skattebo’s leg was pinned and twisted during a tackle. He was carted off the field with an air cast and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. At the time of the injury, the Eagles led 14-7. Skattebo had already scored his team-leading seventh touchdown of the season on an 18-yard reception and totaled 30 yards from scrimmage in the game (three carries for 12 yards and one catch for 18 yards and a TD). Skattebo, a fourth-round pick from Arizona State, entered Week 8 as the NFL rookie leader in scrimmage yards (587) and touchdowns (six), quickly establishing himself as a vital piece in the Giants’ offense and a front-runner for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. The severity of the injury was immediately apparent, with teammates visibly shaken and the Philadelphia crowd giving Skattebo an ovation as he left the field. Dr. David Chao, former NFL team physician, noted on social media that Skattebo is likely facing surgery but could make a full recovery for next season if there are no complications. With Skattebo sidelined, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. is expected to assume a larger role in the Giants’ backfield. Tracy started the season as the lead back before Skattebo took over the starting job. Skattebo’s rookie campaign had been one of the most impressive among all first-year players, outpacing every other rookie skill-position player in total yardage prior to his injury. His rise followed a standout college career at Arizona State, where he was a Heisman Trophy finalist and previously an FCS All-American at Sacramento State. The Giants will need to adjust quickly in his absence as they continue their season.
