Phil Foden was the standout performer, scoring twice and underlining his case for an England recall ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. City manager Pep Guardiola praised Foden’s “incredible goals” and confirmed the midfielder is back to his best form. Guardiola told TNT Sports, “We missed it a lot and I’m pleased other players scored goals and not just Haaland.”
Erling Haaland also found the net, converting a cross from Jeremy Doku for his 18th goal of the season and extending his remarkable Champions League record to 54 goals in 52 appearances. Haaland has now scored in five consecutive Champions League matches for Manchester City, a feat he last achieved with Dortmund in 2021.
Rayan Cherki added a late fourth for City after Dortmund briefly rallied through Anton’s goal, which came from a Julian Ryerson set-piece. The result condemns Dortmund to just their second defeat of the season and continues their poor record in England, with seven losses in their last eight away games against Premier League opposition.
Statistically, City have won 20 and lost none of their last 23 home group stage matches in the Champions League, with 16 of those wins by two or more goals. Their current home form is formidable, with 11 wins in their last 12 games at the Etihad across all competitions, including a run of six consecutive wins by two or more goals.
Guardiola remains cautious but optimistic: “If we can make another one or two victories, maybe we can get close to finishing in the first eight.” With a young starting XI and key players in top form, City look poised for a deep run in this year’s Champions League.
