Acquisition of Sonny Gray Enhances Red Sox Rotation
The Boston Red Sox have acquired veteran starting pitcher Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals, according to multiple reports. In exchange, St. Louis receives left-hander Brandon Clarke, Boston’s No. 5 prospect, and right-hander Richard Fitts. The Red Sox will also get cash considerations as part of the deal. The teams have not yet officially confirmed the trade. Gray, 36, was entering the final year of his three-year contract, set to earn $35 million with a $30 million club option for 2027. The Red Sox are reportedly set to restructure his contract, converting it to a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2026 worth $31 million, and a $10 million buyout. Coming off an impressive 2025 season, Gray posted a 14-8 record with a 4.28 ERA and 201 strikeouts in 180 2/3 innings across 32 starts for St. Louis. He led the National League with a 5.29 strikeout-to-walk ratio, demonstrating his continued dominance on the mound. Gray has now recorded 200-plus strikeouts in consecutive seasons and was the AL Cy Young runner-up in 2023 with the Minnesota Twins. In his first season with the Cardinals, Gray made 28 starts, missing 20 games due to injury but still managed to set franchise records for strikeouts per nine innings (10.98) and strikeout percentage (30.3%). His 203 strikeouts in 2024 were the second-most ever by a pitcher in their first season with St. Louis, trailing only José DeLeón’s 208 in 1988. Gray’s ability to generate swings and misses was highlighted by his 112 strikeouts with his sweeper pitch—the third-highest total for any individual pitch in MLB last season. The Red Sox, who reached the postseason as an AL Wild Card team in 2025, will look to Gray to stabilize their rotation behind ace Garrett Crochet. Gray’s experience and recent performance suggest he can be a difference-maker as Boston aims for a deeper playoff run. The centerpiece of the return for St. Louis is 22-year-old Brandon Clarke, a 2024 fifth-round pick whose fastball touches 100 mph and who pairs it with a high-80s to low-90s slider. In his first professional season, Clarke posted a 4.03 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 38 innings across Single-A and High-A. Richard Fitts, 25, made his MLB debut in 2024 and has a 3.97 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) over two big-league seasons, relying on a four-seam fastball averaging nearly 96 mph and an effective sweeper. Gray’s acquisition marks another significant move in a career that has included All-Star selections with the Oakland Athletics, Cincinnati Reds, Minnesota Twins, and Cardinals. With over 1,500 career strikeouts and a reputation for durability and command, Gray is expected to play a key role for the Red Sox in the 2026 campaign.
